Spending Money

My husband and I congratulated ourselves on completely paying off our credit card by going out and spending money on a new couch for our family room and a cute wrought iron and wood wall shelf! We literally went online and paid off our entire credit card and then walked out the door to look at a couch I saw with my mom yesterday. It just blows my mind how fast money disappears when you buy a new house!

Before we bought our house, we had saved up a good amount for the down payment and had all our credit cards completely paid off. We were completely out of debt. We didn't owe a penny on anything. We even had both cars paid off. Then we bought our house. Now we are definitely in debt. Not just with the mortgage, but we borrowed some money from my parents to add to our down payment so our monthly payments wouldn't be as high. Now, by the time we were done with all the closing costs we could have given half the money we borrowed from my parents back to them, but they refused to take it. They threatened (and with them it wasn't an idle threat) that they would rip up the check if we gave them one. I guess they knew better than we did, how much we would need the extra money for all those things like paint, appliances, tools, etc. when you first buy a house. In the end, we spent all the money we had left over after closing on paint, appliances, painting supplies and new carpet for two rooms (believe me the new carpet was NOT a luxury item in one of the rooms, it was a necessity) and put a nice hefty sum on our credit card as well.

But we really do need a couch. It was one of the first things we wanted to buy when we had the money, and finally we have the money for it now. In fact, it feels good to know we could have paid cash for it but we put it on Visa since we collect mileage. Granted, it isn't a very expensive couch as couches go. It's just a nice, really comfy, squishy couch for our family room. It's a light sage green with green and white piping. We also have green carpet in this room, so we now want to make sure to get away from too much more green. I think I'm starting to get greened out. So we want to get some different colored throw pillows to go on it to bring in some other colors. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out. Our family room isn't all that big and just a regular sized couch is going to fill it up, with room for maybe one more chair. My hubby wants one of those "manly" chairs that recline and I'm hoping he'll settle for something a little less hideous than a barcalounger (sp?). We saw one that we liked at the place we bought the sofa, but wouldn't you know it the thing was forest green. As I said, we are getting greened out. Maybe at a later date we'll investigate to see if they come in any other colors, but for now we'll just enjoy the couch.

Right now the only couch we have isn't really a couch at all. In fact my husband calls it the 'cou'." It is a little loveseat I received from my mom as a Christmas gift over 10 years ago. I was a student at the university living in a studio apartment (granted, that was the CUTEST apartment I ever lived in) and it was the perfect size for that little place. It must have been a pretty high quality little loveseat, because it has been used on a daily basis now for over 10 years and still looks good. It's getting a little worn in some spots but certainly not looking old or worn out yet. The problem with it is that it is small. It's fine for two people to sit on, but you certainly cannot stretch out in it at all. I can kind of nap on it, but wake up with kinks in my neck or my legs fast asleep from hanging over the arm and I'm only 5'1"! This little 'cou' has been a thorn in my hubby's side since we moved in together after getting engaged. Granted, he had two pillows and a blanket on the floor for HIS couch, so at least what I had was better than what he brought into the marriage!

So finally we will have a REAL couch. A couch we can lay down and, more importantly, stretch out on. A couch we can snuggle on together. A couch someone could even sleep on if need be. This is a big deal for us. And it should arrive by next Saturday, unless my hubby is able to go down to South Seattle and pick it up in his brother's truck before then. Wow! First a house and now a couch!

Well, now we are off to my parents for a big family dinner. I'm looking forward to seeing my little nephews again. They are at such a cute age, 4 and 2 (they will be 5 & 3 next month!). The four-year old is currently into writing, directing, and acting in his own plays! (Our own little Shakespeare.) The two-year old is just plain adorable. I could just eat him up. He's just such a happy, snuggly, loving little boy. Oh how I want my own!!
