Thursday, Jun. 06, 2002 - 10:08 p.m. - Another Long Entry
Wow, what a busy last couple of days. It’s time for an update to get you all caught up. First of all, I haven’t received or heard the results of the 3 hour GTT that I did on Tuesday. They said they would have the results the next day, but knowing my Dr’s office, I probably won’t get the results until I call in and ask for them myself. Apparently they call, but if no one answers they don’t leave a message. I understand that they can’t leave results on an answering machine but they could at least speak up and let me know that they tried to reach me. Sheesh. Kinda drives me crazy. In a way, ignorance is bliss, though there is that little niggling in the back of my mind wondering if I passed or not. I have a bad feeling I didn’t, don’t ask me why. Maybe it’s my negative thinking of “sheesh, I’ve had every other kind of problem, why not GD as well.” Still I’m hoping with all my heart I passed and this is one thing I won’t have to add to my list of worries. Anyway, I spent ALL day Tuesday in hospitals! First I went in at 8:30 for my GTT. The lab technician didn’t show until 8:45 so I didn’t drink down the stuff until 8:55, which meant that I had my subsequent blood draws at 9:55, 10:55 and 11:55. Thank goodness the lab technician did a great job at drawing blood and despite the fact I had 4 blood draws I didn’t bruise at all!!! This is especially notable since I bruise much easier being on the heparin, so she really did a good job. Still the 3 hour wait was LONG. It would have been better if they had some comfortable chairs for me to wait in, but it was just those darn uncomfortable waiting room chairs. They also had a video library, so I passed some of my time watching some videos on breastfeeding and newborn care. Interesting, but hard to enjoy when not really sitting comfortably. By the time I got out of there it was already passed noon. I brought along some crackers to tie me over but I was dying to eat something real. I stopped on my way home for a grilled sourdough turkey sandwich at Burgermaster and it sure hit the spot! Not exactly the healthiest sandwich, but it sure was good. Then I made it home just in time to lay down for a quick nap before I had to dash to visit my sister who happened to have surgery that morning. So I headed over to Stevens Hospital which happens to be right next door to where we used to live (and where my sister now lives) to check in on my sister. She had a hysterectomy due to various issues with her menstrual cycle and since she doesn’t want to have children. It might sound extreme, but believe me, in her case it was a good idea. Anyway, I went to visit her in the hospital and commiserate with her (I know the pain of that kind of surgery). Then I had to dash back to the same hospital I had spent the whole morning in (during Seattle rush hour – not a whole lot of fun), for another parenting class. The class was great and very informative. I had to go alone because Michael had driven my SIL back up to Oak Harbor to do some things around the house for her and to get her ready for her driving test. Michael was sorry to miss this class because it was all about breastfeeding. It was a really encouraging class and while I’ve always known that I would want to breastfeed, it gave me more reasons to give it a good try. Fortunately the hospital has lactation consultants and a lactation center for follow up visits if you need them. Hopefully with support from my friends and family I can make it over the rough spots and successfully breastfeed for at least 6 months (I’d like to go a year if I can manage it, but we’ll see). By the time I got home from the class it was already 9:45 and I hadn’t eaten dinner yet, so I ate a tv dinner and called my sweetie on the phone. I found out that Mali had passed her driving test which was great news!! Apparently, she had been extremely nervous and made some major flubs but managed to pass anyway. The flubs were all due to her being so nervous since we had seen her execute a perfect parallel parking job and all the other things ourselves. The next morning I enjoyed hogging the whole bed and slept in a little. Then I got up and did a lot of the cleaning around the house, put out the garbage and recycling, packed, and gave the cat some extra food and then drove up to Oak Harbor to pick up my hubby and celebrate SIL’s successful driving test. We enjoyed a nice dinner together and then drove home again this morning. While Michael was up there he managed to get SIL’s checking account set up, cleaned up the entire garage so that both cars could be parked inside, helped with some of the yard work and various other things. Michael’s brother owes him big time! It was hard to say good bye to SIL because she started crying but we hope we’ll see her again soon. At least we knew she was set up with an account, her driver’s license and everything she might need. Plus we are always just a phone call away. So that is what has kept me away from the computer again. It’s been such a busy few days that my head is spinning. I have a feeling it isn’t going to let up much in the next few days either. I’m SO far behind in housework not to mention I HAVE to finish painting the trim and moldings for the baby room so we can finally get that done! Only 3 weeks and 1 day until my first baby shower! Thanks to everyone who wrote me with concern because I hadn’t written since my bad 1 hour GTT result. I hope you understand why you haven’t heard back from me until now. Hugs all around to all of you!
