Himmelbettchen

I’ve spent the majority of the morning viewing German baby catalogs online. You see when I was in Germany the last time, about 6 years ago, to become a Godmother to my dear friend’s 2nd son, I fell in love with a few of the baby items that are pretty much standard there and can’t be found here in the US. My dream was that when I had a baby that I would be able to purchase a few of those items and have them shipped here.

As soon as I found out that I was pregnant and that things were looking pretty promising and shared my pregnancy with my friends, I asked my friend in Germany to send me some baby catalogs. However, she was in the process of carrying and giving birth to her 5th child and hasn’t had the time to send me any catalogs. I don’t blame her at all. This is a Himmelstange Sheesh, I don’t think I’d have much time for anything if I had 5 children all 8 years old and under. But not the time is growing short and I’d still like to purchase at least a “Himmelstange.” The purpose of this device is to hold fabric to create a “Himmel” which directly translated means a “Heaven” for the baby bed.

A HimmelbettchenThis is the idea. Of course they come in various styles, colors, patterns and price ranges. I haven’t found exactly what I’d like though. And sometimes it’s hard to see the pattern in the pictures. Now if I were handy and could sew, I would pick out some nice fabric here and sew something myself. In fact, I think I found a place online that carries the fabric for the bedding set I chose for my baby bed. That would be ideal, but I’m such an idiot when it comes to sewing and don’t really know anyone who is a good seamstress who I could ask or pay to do it for me. Pathetic, I know.

So the easiest would be to find a pattern online that works with my bedding and just order it from Germany or if we can’t order it directly ask my friend or a relative in Germany to order it and send it and just pay them back the money.

But I’m having such a good time looking at all the items that they have in Germany. For the most part they are much the same as here but there are subtle differences. Plus their little wiege (6k image) cradles and such are a little different and so cute – they even have these little cradles on wheels that allow you to move them from room to room. Perhaps I can relate to them so much because in all my children’s books from Germany, the beds and cradles are all depicted like this. stubenwagen (5k image) I also find it interesting that in Germany children are put to bed with big heavy down comforters and pillows when we are told here to not use even quilts in the bed with the baby out of fear of suffocation and pillows are a HUGE no-no. Yet over there the babies are always bundled up good and warm for the night, even in summer.

The other item I would like to be able to purchase from Germany are “sleep sacks”. I know that just recently a SleepSack has come out here in the US. I find it funny that it is being hailed as such a new and wonderful thing. In fact it is the “First and only product ever to be endorsed by the SIDS Alliance.” These sleep sacks have been around for decades in Germany (and probably other places in Europe for all I know). Best of all they come in SO many different styles, sizes, thicknesses (for summer or winter). I’d love to be able to purchase a few of them in various sizes and weights. And they are so darn cute, unlike the one single style you can purchase here. Of course, they come in all price ranges here. This one store has 62 choices for style and weight!

I don’t think I have any readers who are from Germany, but if you are out there, let me know. I’d love to chat with you sometime.

Well, my husband is grouching at me to get started on some more painting for the baby room and he’s right. I need to get going on that. I don’t know why I’m finding it so hard to get motivated to get to it. I want the room done, so I’d best do the work. I’ve spent way too much time looking up German baby catalogs online. If you are interested in some links let me know. I found a few. Of course, most of them are in German. And funny enough after spending a few hours looking at them, I notice myself thinking in German again!

So Tschuess! (Good bye!)
