Monday, Jun. 17, 2002 - 11:25 p.m. - 28 Weeks
Today I had my 28 week OB appointment and another ultrasound to check the size of the baby and such. I was anxious to see what the ultrasound showed since I got my diagnosis for Gestational Diabetes (GD). Two of the effects of GD can be high birth weight baby and excess amniotic fluid, so I was anxious to see how the Peep was doing and measuring up. First of all the the OB appointment went well. I saw a different OB since mine was on vacation and I liked her a lot. She also gave me a recommendation on a Pediatrician in our area which was great. I need to get that set up since they require that we have a Pediatrician picked out before the baby is born. I’ve been at a loss when it comes to picking one out. Fortunately with our insurance we can self-refer, so if we don’t like a pediatrician we can always change to someone else who is in the insurance network. So I’m not too stressed about that. Then we did my urine check, all good, no protein or sugar in the urine. Weight was good, I even lost 2 lbs. I know normally that you don’t want to lose weight while pregnant, but since I was definitely overweight to begin with the doctor wasn’t concerned with it at all and was actually pleased that I hadn’t gained. My fundal height measured 30 cm so 2 cm more than my weeks along, but I don’t know if I hold much value in that measurement since 2 appointments ago I also measured +2 cm more and then last time I measured on target. It seems like it varies an awful lot. They never seem concerned or worried though, so I’m not going to be. My blood pressure was higher than usual at 140/80, but they said that the lower number is the one they watch and that has been between 70 – 80 all along, so again no worries. And the Peep’s heartbeat was in the 140s. What’s interesting is that this OB asked if I was starting the every-two-week schedule for OB appointments now, which is, as I understand it, pretty common at this point. To be honest I would prefer appointments every 2 weeks from here on out, but my doctor has me going only once a month all the way to 36 weeks and then each week for the last four. When I mentioned that to the OB, she said that that is generally how they do things, but she thought that with my heparin and other issues that I would be seen more often now that I’m in my 3rd trimester. It makes me wonder if that isn’t the way it should be. Anyway, then I had my ultrasound appointment. Michael was supposed to meet me at the hospital for the ultrasound, but didn’t show up by the time they led me into the room. This had me a little concerned because I knew he didn’t want to miss the ultrasound. Fortunately he showed up while the technician was still just taking measurements. I love the technician that we had today and the last time. She is so friendly and explains everything and answers all our questions. I also love the perinatologist that we saw these last few times, but unfortunately by the end of the month she is retiring to only doing some fill-in work. Apparently she started the Maternal Fetal Medicine Center that we go to for the ultrasounds and I will be going to for the diabetes stuff and after working her buns off for x number of years, she is taking a break for the first time ever. I can understand her wanting to do that, but I’m sorry for us that we won’t get to see her anymore. The ultrasound results were wonderful. My cervix is still nice and long at 4 cm, so no pre-term labor expected any time soon. Despite my APA, ANA and GD issues, the Peep seems to be growing perfectly and is right on target size wise. Also my amniotic fluid level is perfect (it can be too high due to the GD as well). All her organs look great and her heart is beating wonderfully. During the ultrasound she had the hiccups and that was so cute! She also was opening her mouth and swallowing fluid and practicing breathing. She was also sucking her fingers and trying to open her eyes. They aren’t quite open yet but she’s getting them open a little. We saw her kicking and wiggling her head. OH, and she already has some hair!!! Both the technician and the doctor commented on it. It’s only a little but it’s there! The best news is that she is just doing perfectly. The APA, ANA and GD issues haven’t seemed to affected her. She’s nice and active. The doctor was saying that perhaps with my GD issue and my APA issue she’ll end up just fine weight wise. Funny enough my APA issues can cause low birth weight babies and the GD can cause higher birth weight babies so the doctor was saying that perhaps the two will even things out! Funny enough, I had joked about this with Michael when I found out my GD diagnosis. Really though, as long as I control the diabetes it shouldn’t adversely affect her too much, which is a big relief to me. The doctor even said that my levels weren’t so terribly high and that I should be able to control it with diet and exercise alone. It helped to put my mind at ease a little. Oh and I am now finally and completely convinced that she is a GIRL. We had the technician check once again and she took TWO ultrasound pictures that showed without a doubt that she is a girl and NOT a boy. Michael is thrilled. He’s going to have his little girl. And everyone already knows how thrilled I am. So today was a good day as far as getting some peace of mind for a while about our little Peep. I’ll have to post an ultrasound picture another time as it is time for me to go and do my injection. I meant for this to be a quick update, but then I should know better, I can never keep things short! I’ll have to write about our wonderful Father’s Day another time too. Hugs to all my readers!!! And some special hugs to two dear friends and journalers who are going through a rough time right now – you know who you are.
