Jabbing My Finger Begins

Well I went in for my gestational diabetes consultation. I had no idea it was going to be 2 hours long! First I met with a dietician who went over my meal plans with me and told me what foods I could not eat (no fruit juice (wah!) and no fruit before lunch time), what foods I should limit (rice, white potatoes, white bread, tortillas and pasta), and a general meal plan. I wish they would have given me a few more example menu ideas. The ones I got are good ones and I didn’t realize I could still have some popcorn and even ice cream in small quantities. (And as long as I have some protein along with the ice cream.) If anyone knows of a site online that has some sample menu and snack ideas I’d appreciate it. I know there are many sites online but some of them are a bit overwhelming. I just need a few ideas for snacks and such mainly. I’ll do fine as far as meals go, I think.

As for my break down of carbs for the day, I can have 30g for breakfast, then 15g for a midmorning snack, 65g for lunch, 15g for an afternoon snack, 70g for dinner and 30g for a bedtime snack if I’m hungry. Of course, this is what they are going to try me on to begin with but depending on my blood sugar levels we might have to adjust it. For the most part I think it is more than generous for me. I’m not a huge eater. Meals probably won’t be too different for me (except I can’t enjoy as much rice with those wonderful Thai dishes my SIL cooks), but snacks will have to be more planned. I’m used to grabbing what I felt like eating at the time.

Fortunately, I’m still don’t really have much of a sweet tooth, though I am going to miss being able to eat a lot of fruit and drink fruit juice. OH and my biggest loss is that this whole summer I won’t be able to have my beloved Slurpees!!! Man, to me summer time is Slurpee time, even more than ice cream. And no popsicles either. (sigh) I think I might bring some along to the hospital if they have freezers in the rooms (I know they have refrigerators), so I can celebrate the birth of our child with a popsicle! LOL

After going over this information with the dietician, the nurse came in and talked with me some more about diet and exercise and my blood glucose levels. They gave me a nifty little glucose monitor (One Touch Ultra) and a prescription for test strips and lancets. I did one test with her guidance and I must say the finger stick didn’t hurt too much at all. I’m supposed to measure my blood glucose levels 4-5 times a day – first thing in the morning before eating, 1 or 2 hours after breakfast, lunch and dinner and if I want to have an evening snack I need to check my blood glucose before I eat.

You know the most annoying part of all this, I only failed the GTT by 2 points!!!! Their cut off point for the 1 hour GTT is 140 so anyone getting 139 or less doesn’t have to do the 3 hour GTT. My score was 141! Ack!

One thing that does worry me is that they are taking me completely off the Glucophage, so I wonder how that is going to affect my blood sugars. I sure hope it doesn’t make it harder for me to control them. Today all the blood sugar tests I did were well within the normal limits but then I’m still probably reaping the benefits of my extended release glucophage pills. We’ll see what my fasting blood sugar levels are when I’m off it. When I took the 3 hour GTT I was also on the glucophage and my levels weren’t that far off, but a little over their baseline for the 1 hour and 2 hour blood levels. But I guess this will give me a better idea of what I’m dealing with as a long-term issue with blood sugars and adult onset diabetes.

My new toy.

I also promised to post an ultrasound picture of the Peep from Monday, June 17th. If you look at the picture the right way you can see her face pretty clearly. Her head is tilted to the right, her right eye can be seen partially open (she was opening her eyes as we were watching), you can vaguely see her nose and her mouth. There is a white spot in her mouth which is a baby tooth all ready to come down. In the ultrasound it looks like she already has the tooth showing. There is a “loop” where her ear would be that looks like a hoop earring – that’s actually part of the umbilical chord! When we were looking at this one the screen at the doctor’s office (they had that frame frozen while we waited for the perinatologist to come in and talk with us) we could see even more detail and I swear it looks like she might have a small cleft in her chin just like I do! We’ll see if that’s true after she is born! But I think this is the neatest ultrasound picture. I keep staring at it, wanting to meet this little miracle of ours and look at each and every tiny little inch of her!!

Our Peep at 28 weeks!

Well, it’s late and we have a big day tomorrow. We are renting a paint sprayer and are going to try to spray the remaining molding (chair and baseboard) for the baby room as well as spray all the baseboard molding we are replacing in our whole downstairs. It’s all been cut, but it’s been so painstaking to paint by hand, that we thought we might be able to knock out the whole thing in one day, then Michael will rent a brad nailer and just nail in all the pieces the next day. If this works, we should get the majority of the nursery completed in the next few days. Then it will just need the carpet installation and completing the shelves and decorating!! Wohoo! I can hardly wait till the room is basically done. Then I can concentrate on some other things around the house and for the baby!
