How the Peep Got Her Name

11:30 am -I’m sitting here, still not combed or washed, but at least I am dressed and I did manage to unload the dishwasher and reload it, clean up the kitchen and make two beds! Unfortunately, it looks as though my little one will be waking up here again shortly and then it will be feeding time and changing time and walking around with her time. (She does not like to sit still at all and is only happy if we are up and walking around with her when she is awake. This is very tiring on poor mommy and daddy. When will my baby have awake and happy time???)

10:00 pm – Well, Miss Alyssa Arianna has been a real grumpy pants today. She’s just snacking at my breasts and then taking short snippets of naps. Once I go to put her down so that I can actually do something, she wakes up in just a few minutes and I end up walking her around or feeding her again. It’s been like this all day. What’s worse, is that Michael was gone the majority of the day at an interview (cross fingers and toes for us please!!), so I really didn’t get a break. I didn’t even wash my face or comb my hair or brush my teeth until Michael came back from his interview at around 2:00 pm! We even tried to take her for a walk in her brand new stroller (a gift from my brother and SIL), thinking that perhaps a change of scenery would do her good (or at least do ME good), but even then she ended up being carried 95% of the time by Michael, while I pushed the empty stroller. While being carried she snoozed, the moment we tried to put her down she woke up and started screaming again.

Anyway, at the moment Michael has her and she isn’t screaming so I’m grabbing this moment to write a little something about her name since people have asked how we chose it.

To be honest, there wasn’t any special significance of her name. Neither the first nor middle name are family names or names of people who mean something to us. Alyssa was a top choice contender for a name from the beginning, along with Alexis and Alexa. No real reason other than we like them. Arianna was also a name choice at the beginning and then kind of was forgotten for a while. A few other choices were :

Amelia
Anneliese
Heidi-Anne
Heidrun (my mom’s name) (middle only)
Julia
Julianna
Katelyn (middle only)
Katherine (middle only)
Madeleine
Victoria (middle only)
Virginia (middle only)

Some combinations that I wrote down were the following :

Alyssa Katherine
Alyssa Heidi-Anne
Alyssa Heidrun
Alyssa Arianna
Arianna Katherine
Alexis Arianna
Alexis Madeleine
Heidi-Anne Virginia
Heidi-Anne Katelyn

Going into the hospital on September 2nd, my top choices were Alyssa Katherine and Alyssa Heidrun and I also had Alyssa Arianna “starred” on my list, but it wasn’t a strong contender at the time.

I really considered Alyssa Heidrun for a long time, because I thought it would be nice to name her after my mother and I didn’t think Heidrun was so strange of a name that would cause her much grief, but I was still a little hesitant to give her such a different name. (It is pronounced “Hi – droon” basically.) I honestly started thinking of her as Alyssa Katherine too for a while shortly before her birth, but still just wasn’t sure. Michael had his own ideas too, many of which didn’t appeal to me, but I thought I’d keep an open mind until she was born and we could look at her. (I’ll have to find his list and list some of his favorites as well.)

Shortly after she was finally brought to me, my parents went to get something to eat and to leave us alone with our little daughter. The made a comment about picking a name for her while they were gone, and we agreed that we would do some talking about a name. As it turned out, it didn’t take much talking or very long at all. Michael read through my list and we both agreed almost immediately that she looked like an “Alyssa Arianna” and that was it! We both commented on the fact that it was a name we really hadn’t considered before, but that we both really liked it. And, to be honest, I honestly thought she looked like an Arianna, more than a Katherine or a Heidrun or a Heidi-Anne or any of the other names we had listed.

So after all our talking, discussing and even fighting, we decided on her name pretty quickly and easily and to this day we both agree that we like the name we’ve chosen for her and Alyssa Arianna just fits our little princess to a “Peep”!
